What changes have you made to your home?

The house has insulation above current building regulations with an airtight lining. Our home has 6.3kWh solar panel array, 40kWh grid connected storage battery with grid trading software, and MVHR. An air source heat pump (ASHP) was installed, connected to underfloor heating downstairs, and an air-to-air heat pump was fitted as a backup. The later also acts as air conditioning. We also have an efficient wood burner and run two electric vehicles (EV). Lastly, we have rainwater harvesting for garden use and washing the cars.

Why did you make these changes?

As we are planning to retire, we wanted to reduce monthly outgoings to a minimum, followed by comfortable living having lived in many homes from Georgian to 1990s built. Plus, it’s important to stop importing fossil fuels to burn; so, we wanted to make an environmental contribution by reducing our emissions.
