Property details

Four bedroom detached timber-frame house built in 2000.

What changes have you made to your home?

We built the house to green standards of the time in terms of loft, wall and underfloor insulation. We designed for maximum passive solar heating by orienting the building towards the sun, with large windows on the south and smaller windows on the north. K glass was used for the double glazing. In 2005 we added a south-facing sun room which increased the potential for passive solar heating. Also, in the same year we installed an air-source heat pump (ASHP) to replace the combi boiler and an indiction hob to replace the gas cooker, removing our gas supply at the same time. In 2010 we fitted 12 solar photovoltaic panels (PV) on the roof and in 2024 we had a charging point for an electric vehicle (EV) installed.

Why did you make these changes?

We wanted to be more sustainable, reduce our dependence on and consumption of fossil fuels.
